Coronavirus Ireland: Third person dies from COVID-19 in the Republic with 557 cases now confirmed

A woman in the east of the country has become the third person has died of coronavirus in the Republic of Ireland.

The elderly woman, who had underlying health issues, sadly died at St Vincent's University Hospital in Dublin shortly at around 3:20pm yesterday.

The Department of Health confirmed the death this evening as they announced that there have now been 557 cases in the Republic of Ireland.

There was a huge increase of diagnosed cases with 191 new confirmed cases. Yesterday saw 74 new cases.

And sadly, Northern Ireland also saw its first fatality from COVID-19 today, also an elderly person who was being treated in hospital in the greater Belfast area.

The death toll across the island of Ireland now stands at four, while there are 634 confirmed cases of coronavirus north and south.

The average age of people getting the Covid-19 virus is 43, “a youngish profile” as Department of Health Chief Medical Officer, Dr Tony Holohan described it.

The news comes as Italy's death toll from COVID-19 overtook that of China, the country where the disease was first identified back in December 2019.

A staggering 3,405 people in Italy have now died from the deadly virus, while 3,245 people have died of COVID-19 in China.

Back home, a three-month moratorium on evictions has been announced as Irish people feel the squeeze.

The Government has said that as many as 400,000 out of a workforce of 2.3m could lose their jobs as a result of the ongoing coronavirus crisis.

Meanwhile, the median age of patients in Ireland is just 43, it was revealed tonight, with Dr Holoahan stressing that younger people need to understand the importance of self-isolation, if not for themselves but for their more vulnerable, elderly friends and relatives.

And Leaving and Junior Certificate students' oral exams were cancelled earlier today, with Education bosses announcing that all students would get 100%.
