Coronavirus Ireland: Stephen Kenny shares message with public on Covid-19 crisis

Ireland Under-21 boss and future senior team manager Stephen Kenny has promoted social distancing in a video message to the public.

Kenny - who will take over the reins of the national side from Mick McCarthy - warned that frontline workers should be looked after during the Covid-19 crisis.

"We've got to look after everyone in the frontline services, especially doctors and nurses," Kenny told FAI TV.

"I have friends who are nurses and doctors, and when you consider that 15 doctors have died in Italy, just shows you the self-sacrifice that all of the workers on the frontline are contributing.

"I think we owe it to all of them to keep social distancing. To follow all of the government guidelines in relation to washing hands and staying at home.

"Let's look after ourselves, by looking after each other."

With the Euro playoffs postponed until the start of June at least, and the tournament itself pushed back to 2021, it is unclear as to who will manage Ireland beyond the summer.

FAI deputy chief executive Niall Quinn kicked the can down the road a week ago, claiming the playoff takes priority.

“It’s very early to talk on the basis that we still have these games which affect everything,” said the former Ireland striker.

“You hope that it is two (playoff) games - and the time to talk is June 10.”

Current boss McCarthy rowed in behind UEFA's decision on the postponements yesterday, saying:  “It was the right thing to do. We’re not complaining about that - we fully support it.

“Football will come back when the time is right and we have resolved all these issues.
But we have to play our part and stay safe.”
