Coronavirus Ireland: Staggering 23 counties record zero new cases as infections plummet

A staggering 23 counties have reported zero coronavirus cases over the last 24 hours, new statistics show.

Just three areas saw an increase in Covid-19 infections as Ireland continues to drive the disease out of the community.

Dublin, Cork and Carlow saw a rise in case numbers of four, two and one respectively, according to the latest data released by the Health Protection Surveillance Centre (HPSC).

The figures are valid up to midnight on Monday, June 8.

It comes after it emerged that the number of people being treated in Irish hospitals with confirmed coronavirus is at its lowest level since before St Patrick's Day.

The latest figures from the HSE show that just 75 cases were being treated in a hospital setting as of 8pm on Wednesday.

This number is down from the peak of around 900 which was recorded in mid-April.

There were seven patients diagnosed in hospitals in the 24 hours prior to 8pm on Wednesday - four of these were in the Mater.

This figure has fluctuated between 130 and 250 for several weeks, according to the HSE's daily operations reports.

In terms of critical cases, there were 29 confirmed cases being treated in an ICU on Wednesday night.
