Coronavirus Ireland: Seamus Coleman sends message to the country

Seamus Coleman has urged people to stay safe during the COVID-19 pandemic.

The FAI shared a video on social media of the Republic of Ireland captain addressing fans.

In the clip, Coleman says: "We love coming together to support Ireland but now it's time to stay apart.

"Please respect the guidelines, please wash your hands, stay two metres apart from each other and respect social distancing.

"This is an extremely important period for Ireland so now it's time to play your part by staying apart.

"Best wishes to everyone and stay safe!"

Earlier this week, Coleman donated €20,000 to a fundraising drive backing Irish frontline workers fighting Covid-19.

The Everton skipper made the donation to Feed The Heroes - an online fundraiser that drops meals to hospitals, ambulance centres, fire depots, Garda stations and contact tracing centres across Ireland.

The group, set up by Cian O'Flaherty and Tad McAllister from the property tech firm Safecility, issued a statement thanking those who have donated so far for their strong support.

"We have been utterly blown away by the response of the public, and the trust and responsibility they are giving us to support the family, friends and loved ones they have on the front line," it read.

"We have ramped up an operation and now have networks across the country.

"Our partners are dropping planned meals in coordination with frontline staff where it's needed. This has been greeted with an incredibly powerful sense of solidarity. You have had an impact."
