Coronavirus: Ireland's 66 covid-19 clusters and why 19 concern officials the most

The Department of Health have said there are currently 66 clusters of coronavirus in the Republic of Ireland.

Clusters are defined as areas or small communities where the virus has been transmitted to a number of people.

Of the 66 clusters spread around the country - none of which have been given pinpoint locations - officials are mostly concerned about 19 of those.

These are nine clusters in nursing homes, eight clusters in hospitals and a further two in "community and long stay environments".

Chief Medical Officer Tony Holohan said of these clusters on Thursday night: "The risks to people in those settings, either by reason of age or by reason of medical illness or a combination of both is very significant.

"In some of those facilities, some of the practices of infection control are harder to implement and it creates a significant risk for individuals in those settings.

“As we’ve been saying all along – care for your loved one by staying away."

Coronavirus deaths in the Republic of Ireland surged by 10 on Thursday with the figure now standing at 19.

A further 13 people have died from the virus in Northern Ireland with the all-island figure now standing at 32.

The median age of the victims who have sadly died in the Republic from Covid-19 is 79.

Of the 10 new deaths, 9 patients are in the east of the country and one is in the south of the country.

Some 68% of those that have died are male and 32% are female.

A further 255 new confirmed cases of the virus were also announced on Thursday evening with 1,819 cases in the Republic so far.
