Coronavirus Ireland: Ryanair launch September seat sale amid claims they're refusing to pay cash refunds to customers who had flights cancelled due to COVID-19

Ryanair has launched a September seat sale while refusing to refund customers who have had flights cancelled due to the coronavirus outbreak until the pandemic has passed.

The budget airline is advertising seats from €39.99 to destinations such as Amsterdam, Berlin and Copenhagen.

The company is reportedly refusing to give immediate cash refunds to customers who had their flights cancelled due to the deadly virus.

Customers are instead being put in a cash refund queue but are being offered vouchers immediately as an alternative.

Passengers who have flights cancelled are entitled to claim a refund under EU law EC261

The airline has been forced to ground about 90% of its flights due to the COVID-19 crisis with Group CEO Michael O'Leary saying he doesn't expect full service to resume until June.

Speaking last month, he said: "The experience in China suggests a 3-month period for the spread of the virus to be contained and reduced.

"We do not expect to operate flights during the months of April and May at this time, but this will clearly depend upon Government advice, and we will in all cases comply with these instructions."

Ryanair has offered rescue and medical flights to EU governments and are operating a very limited flight schedule for emergencies.

Ryanair DAC CEO Eddie Wilson said: "We are ready to return flying when COVID-19 is defeated, hopefully sooner rather than later, but until then let's all take care of ourselves, each other, our families and our communities."

Dublin Live has contacted Ryanair for comment.
