Coronavirus Ireland: Response teams to be sent by HSE to nursing homes in fight against COVID-19 clusters

Response teams are to be sent to nursing homes by the HSE in the fight against coronavirus clusters.

It is understood that the medical teams will be assigned to 38 locations where clusters have been identified.

Their job will be to assist and advise staff on how to best contain and handle the virus, RTE reports.

A cluster is defined as three or more cases in a single institution for a 72-hour period.

There are currently 160 clusters around the country, with a total of 4,273 confirmed cases of the deadly bug in Ireland.

Sadly, 120 people have now passed away from the disease.

Chief Medical Officer Dr Tony Holohan specifically expressed his worry over the number of clusters in nursing homes nationwide.

Speaking at a press briefing on Friday evening, he said: "We are concerned with the number of clusters identified in nursing homes.

"We have identified a range of measures, working with the HSE.

"We need to see continuous actions being taken to reduce the risk of transmission in nursing home and long-term residential facilities."

Earlier on Friday, it was revealed that the bug has claimed 12 more lives in Northern Ireland.

A total of 48 people have now sadly died in the North after testing positive for Covid-19.

And 130 new cases of the virus were confirmed, bringing the total number in the region to 904.
