Coronavirus: Ireland records first death from killer disease

Ireland has today recorded its first death from coronavirus.

The woman, thought to be elderly, died in a hospital in the east of the country.

She was initially treated there for respiratory problems and had an underlying illness, it is said.

The number of cases of Covid-19 continues to rise across Ireland. There are 34 confirmed cases, including the woman who has died.

It is unclear where the patient picked up the virus.

The outbreak will have a huge impact on Ireland's economy, experts say.

In the UK, the chancellor warned our economy will also suffer as a result.

Rishi Sunak said he plans to use measures announced by the Governor of the Bank of England to manage the potential impact of the virus.

He said the Budget will ensure businesses, the public and those in public services working on the front line against the virus get the support they need.

Six people have died of the virus in the UK.

The total number of cases here has soared though to 456.

Italians, meanwhile, are being told to stay at home as the crisis unfolds, with the number of cases there topping 10,100.
