Coronavirus Ireland: Real story behind 'McDonald's Dublin queue' picture which sparked public outrage

A picture doing the rounds online claiming to show a massive queue outside a Dublin McDonald's hours before all of its stores were due to close in Ireland is fake.

The photo, which outraged the Irish public, shows a long line of about 40 youngsters - clearly not abiding by social distancing rules currently being implemented during the coronavirus outbreak - as they queue outside the famous golden arches.

It began circulating heavily on social media, especially in Dublin quarters, on Monday afternoon as McDonald's got ready to close all of its Irish restaurants by 7pm, Dublin Live reports.

The snap was shared by hundreds of people in the capital with names of different Dublin stores being dropped into the captions followed by messages of outrage and disgust that social distancing was not being practiced.

And although there was mass hysteria around Dublin and the rest of the country as people tried to snatch their last Big Mac or McFlurry for the foreseeable future, this particular photo was not taken in Dublin nor was it snapped on Monday.

It was actually taken last summer in Manchester (Chronicle Live WS)

It was actually taken last summer in Manchester when hundreds of people queued for hours to get the first taste of McDonald's new spicy nuggets in August and was  penned by the Mirror UK.

YouTubers Tobjizzle and MiniMinter of gaming collective The SideMen, announced at the time that the new McNuggets would be handed out free at a Greater Manchester branch.

Hungry fast food fans had a two-hour window to dash to the McDonald’s on Cross Lane, Salford to be one of the first to try them out.

600 nuggets were given out for free to those willing to brave the queues.
