Coronavirus Ireland: Pub reopening and Green List decision expected as Micheal Martin to address nation

A decision on whether all Irish pubs will be allowed to reopen is expected this evening.

Government officials will decide today if Ireland can advance to Phase 4 of the coronavirus roadmap next Monday.

The National Public Health Emergency Team will meet this morning to discuss the new measures, and Cabinet will meet later this afternoon to consider their advice.

A senior minister said there is a "general consensus" within Cabinet that pubs should be able to reopen, the Irish Independent reports.

A decision on whether to update the Green List is also expected today.

It comes after leading Dublin doctor warned coronavirus cases could shoot up "dramatically" if pubs and nightclubs reopen too quickly.

Pubs that don't serve food are currently scheduled to open on Monday, August 10.

Taoiseach Micheal Martin said on Friday the number of new cases will be monitored "very carefully" over the bank holiday weekend before a decision is made on allowing pubs and nightclubs to reopen their doors.

Assistant Professor of Virology at Trinity College, Dr Kim Roberts, said opening pubs and nightclubs was "risky" as she expressed concern about the fact 20% of recent cases came from community transmission, Dublin Live reports.

"That's the group that I'm keeping a close eye on because when we have community transmission we're usually not seeing the full picture," she told RTE's Morning Ireland.

"We're only seeing the tip of the iceberg because with this virus lots of people can have very mild symptoms that they could potentially ignore and if we're getting community transmission then over a few weeks the numbers could increase dramatically.

"At the moment our numbers are still looking very good when compared to other European countries but it is worth looking ahead and trying to limit as much transmission now as possible so that the numbers don't increase over the next few weeks."
