Coronavirus Ireland: Over 100 cases confirmed in Dublin as 217 daily infections highest since May

As the number of daily coronavirus cases in Ireland reached its highest number since May, it was confirmed that 103 of those are in Dublin.

There have been 217 further cases announced, bringing the total in the country since the pandemic began to 29,025.

Of those confirmed, 103 are male and 113 are women, while 70% of cases are in people under 45 years of age.

Yesterday, Dr Ronan Glynn gave a stark warning over the rising number of cases that are being confirmed in the capital.

The capital along with Carlow, Limerick and Wexford in the last fortnight have had a high number of infections compared to the rest of the country.

And the Acting Chief Medical Officer has warned that people in these counties should take "extra care".

However he insisted that the number of infections in these areas does not necessarily mean there will be a local lockdown.

He told a press conference on Monday: "In relation to Dublin, we're keeping it under review, we keep the situation in all counties under review.

"But to a certain extent what we're seeing in Dublin now is a reversion to the situation we would have seen earlier in the pandemic.

"Obviously Dublin has a very significant population and so it's not surprising we're seeing more cases in Dublin than in other counties, but we will keep it closely under review."

Of the confirmed cases today, 51% are confirmed to be associated with outbreaks or are close contacts of a confirmed case and 19 cases have been identified as community transmission.

Dr Glynn said today: “While the number of cases today is the highest daily reported figure since May, the five day moving average remains relatively stable at 115 cases per day.

"However, this is still a substantial number of cases and I urge everyone to double down on their efforts now – wash hands regularly, physically distance from others, wear face coverings where appropriate, avoid crowded areas, know the symptoms, isolate and contact your GP if you have any concerns.

“Please continue to reduce your social contacts so that the virus does not get the opportunity to spread further.”
