Coronavirus Ireland: Outbreak clusters of Covid-19 cases found in Irish pub and 22 nursing homes

A cluster of coronavirus cases has been found in an Irish pub, new statistics reveal.

A total of 22 different clusters were also discovered in nursing homes across the country.

20 of the nursing home outbreaks were based in the east of the country, according to the data released by the from the Health Protection Surveillance Centre.

The remaining two clusters were in the north-east.

A pub in the south of the country was identified as an outbreak cluster, as well as a hotel in the south.

Five different workplaces and 19 hospitals were also at the centre of clusters.

The statistics also show that one patient under the age of 34 has died from coronavirus in Ireland.

They are one of the 46 people who have tragically died from Covid-19.

The vast majority of the deaths from the killer bug are pensioners, with 88% of all recorded fatalities so far coming in patients over the age of 65.

In total, 25 people under the age of 24 have needed to be hospitalised due to the disease.

It comes after 10 more people have died from the coronavirus in the Republic of Ireland with 200 new cases confirmed on Sunday evening.

The total amount of deaths in the country now stands at 46 with 2,615 confirmed cases in the Republic.

Some 21 have now died in Northern Ireland with a further 410 confirmed cases in the country - that brings the nationwide figure for cases to 3,025 and deaths 76.

Chief Medical Officer Tony Holohan said: "Our condolences are with the family and friends of all patients who have died as a result of COVID-19.

“While we continue to build our capacity for intensive care, our strategy remains to prevent people from needing intensive care in the first place.

“We know the virus will not survive if we prevent it from passing among ourselves. The enhanced restrictions announced on Friday aim to slow down and restrict the spread of the virus.”
