Coronavirus Ireland: One county has gone more than two weeks without a new case

Sligo has gone more than two weeks without a new case of coronavirus, figures reveal.

The last time the county reported a new infection was on Wednesday, May 13, according to the latest statistics released by the Health Protection Surveillance Centre.

The total number of Covid-19 patients reported in the county stands at 129.

Figures revealed on Monday show that Dublin remains the epicentre of the disease in Ireland, with a staggering 12,042 confirmed cases.

The stats cover the period up to midnight on Friday, May 29.

And there's more good news, as a total of 11 counties reported no new cases in the previous 24-hour period.

Clare, Donegal, Kerry, Kildare, Leitrim, Mayo, Offaly, Sligo, Waterford, Wexford and Wicklow recorded no rise in infections in the latest numbers released yesterday.

It comes after two more people died and 66 new cases of Covid-19 were confirmed in the Republic of Ireland on Monday evening.

The latest figures bring the total number of deaths here to 1,652 and the total number of cases confirmed to 24,990.

The Department of Health announced the figures on Sunday evening.

HSE boss Paul Reid said there are currently 36 people with Covid-19 fighting for their lives in ICU.

It is a significant reduction, down from 160 people in early April.
