Coronavirus Ireland: Number of patients waiting for hospital bed falls to historic low during pandemic

The number of patients waiting on trolleys in hospitals has fallen to historic lows.

Just seven patients were waiting to be admitted to Emergency Departments around the country on Monday, according to the Irish Nurses’ and Midwives’ Organisation.

On the same day last month there were 359 patients on trolleys, while the first Monday in January saw 760 patients waiting to be admitted to Emergency Departments.

The month of April has seen patient waiting lists drop to single digits most days while the numbers of people being admitted with coronavirus continues to skyrocket.

The latest HSE stats show that on 1st April, 1,118 Covid-19 patients had been admitted to hospital while 158 people were in ICU.

Meanwhile, just six hospitals had patients waiting on trolleys on Monday.

There were two patients on trolleys in Naas General Hospital and one each in St James’s Hospital Dublin, the Midlands Regional Hospitals in Mullingar and Portlaoise, Portiuncula University Hospital Galway and University hospital Kerry.
