Coronavirus Ireland: Number of patients hit by killer bug fall by 92%

Ireland has seen a staggering 92% drop in the number of coronavirus patients in hospital, it was revealed yesterday.

Statistics showed on April 14 884 infected people were in wards around the country.

But yesterday Health Minister Simon Harris said the number now stands at just 71.

He added 24 patients are battling the disease in intensive care, which is a major decrease from a peak of 160.

Mr Harris praised the public for their progress so far but said more needs to be done.

He tweeted: “We think of those who are sick, their families & healthcare staff. Build on the progress by sticking with public health advice.”

It comes after 22 counties reported zero new coronavirus cases over the last 24 hours.

Dublin, which has been the epicentre of the outbreak here, recorded three new infections, bringing the city’s total to 12,213.

The data from the Health Protection Surveillance Centre covers the period up to last Saturday and also showed Mayo, Kildare and Wicklow had rises.
