Coronavirus Ireland: NPHET 'keeping an eye' on Dublin COVID situation as 383 remain hospitalised with disease

There are 383 still in Dublin hospitals with COVID-19 with 83 of those cases in critical care in ICU.

And a further 80 suspected cases are waiting to find out their coronavirus test result, while only four ICU beds remain for adults and four for children.

The Blanchardstown/Mulhuddart area of Dublin also has the highest infection rate of COVID-19 in Ireland over a 14-day period at 756.2 people infected per 100k.

There were 921 cases confirmed on Friday evening, with 414 of those in Dublin as well as 23 further deaths related to COVID-19.

Almost half of confirmed COVID-19 cases were in Dublin, and while a higher percentage is to be expected due to the population size, it has still been flagged as a concern after Thursday's caseload, which saw the capital accounted for more than 50%.

Deputy Chief Medical Officer Dr Ronan Glynn has said that it is something that "NPHET are keeping an eye on" over the coming days to see if the trend continues.

Yesterday he said: "We have made progress in Ireland over recent weeks, but the rate of transmission of the disease is still extremely high and the risks COVID-19 poses to our vulnerable loved ones have not changed.

“Everyone is working hard to drive down COVID-19 infection in the community, and we must all continue to limit the number of daily contacts we have. The only way to limit the spread of COVID-19 is to limit our social contacts and follow the public health advice, wash our hands, maintain a social distance, wear a face covering where appropriate, work from home and stay at home.”
