Coronavirus Ireland: Newstalk presenter Sinead Ryan awaits Covid-19 test after 'horrible symptoms'

Newstalk presenter Sinead Ryan said she is still awaiting a coronavirus test despite suffering "horrible symptoms".

The journalist and broadcaster said she was initially put on a list for testing but after ringing the HSE they were unable to update her or the status of her test.

Speaking on Twitter Ms Ryan said that she will be fine but questions the cases figures each day if people like her aren't being tested.

The broadcaster said: " I've been waiting since last Sunday for a Covid-19 test. Experiencing fairly horrible symptoms all week.

"Called HSE this morning - they couldn't confirm I was on the list, there was a list, who held the list or any way of contacting anybody to check progress.

"I'm fine, and will be. However there seems little point in announcing very specific figs each day for new cases, when they must be so far off the mark."

She also added that her symptoms included no taste or smell for a week, being very tired and feeling fluey.

However she did not have a fever which is one of the main criteria for getting a test.

Earlier in the week Taoiseach Leo Varadkar said the country is not where it wants to be at in terms of testing but they are working on getting there.

Speaking in Dublin on Wednesday, Mr Varadkar told reporters he understands the anxiety and worry of people waiting for tests and results.

"The current cause of delay is a shortage of reagents. We hope to address that, but then there may be a shortage of something else. We have to be honest about that - we will hit delays," he said.

"In Ireland, we've decided as a country to do a lot of tests. We're in the top tier of countries in the world when it comes to number of tests we're doing. That's the right thing to do in terms of containing the virus.

"But we are running into difficulties and we need to be honest with people and frank about that."
