Coronavirus Ireland news: People 'to be allowed travel anywhere in own county' from next week

Irish people will be allowed travel anywhere in their own county from Monday, it has been reported.

The current 5km radius travel restriction is expected to be extended to 20km once phase two kicks in.

However, RTE is reporting that the Cabinet has agreed that citizens will be able to travel as far as they like - as long as they stay in their own county.

This is in addition to the 20km travel limit.

Political leaders have been in a meeting since 10am to discuss the latest advice from National Public Health Emergency Team.

Taoiseach Leo Varadkar is expected to make an announcement soon after, confirming the country can proceed to phase two of easing coronavirus lockdown restrictions.

Meanwhile, the Pandemic Unemployment Payment and the Wage Subsidy Scheme have been officially extended.

Finance Minister Paschal Donohoe said the wage subsidy payments will continue until August at least.

And Minister for Employment Affairs and Social Protection, Regina Doherty, has announced that the €350 payment will continue until phase five on August 10.

Minister Doherty said that people working part-time before the scheme was brought it will have their benefit cut, but they will still be earning more than they were before March 13.
