Coronavirus Ireland news: Big drop in serious cases as 17 hospitals now Covid-19-free

Seventeen hospitals in Ireland are now treating zero confirmed cases of the coronavirus.

It comes as the total number hospitalised cases dropped to 42 - down from 62 in just 48 hours.

The Mater in Dublin continues to have the most patients, with 11 there as of 8pm on Thursday.

Beaumont had eight, while Limerick and Galway were both treating five cases.

Three Covid-19 patients were in Tallaght, and Cork, Kilkenny and St Vincent's all had two.

And hospitals in Kerry, Mercy, Cavan and Drogheda were treating just one patient with the bug.

The other 17 hospitals in Ireland had no confirmed case on site, according to the latest HSE operations report.

There were a further 204 suspected cases of the virus across the country's main 29 hospitals.

Despite the drop in hospitalised cases, the number of people in ICU has stayed steady with 21 in receipt of critical care on Thursday night.

There were also 10 further suspected Covid-19 patients in intensive care.

Meanwhile, the Health Protection Surveillance Centre was notified on Thursday that four more people diagnosed with the coronavirus in Ireland have died.

The death toll now stands at 1,714.

A further 16 cases of the coronavirus were also announced.

There have now been 25,355 confirmed cases of the bug in Ireland.
