Coronavirus Ireland: New bank holiday at 'tail end of the year' a possibility, says Brendan Griffin

A new bank holiday at the ""tail end of the year" could be introduced to Irish tourist hotspots missing out due to the Covid-19 pandemic.

Junior Minster for Tourism Brendan Griffin has long been a fan of extra bank holidays.

And after Simon Harris suggested the idea could be a possibility earlier this week, Griffin doubled down on that stance in the Dail today.

"Coming from a county that is so dependent on tourism, I have felt for a long time that an additional bank holiday, either in the earlier part of the year or the tail end of the year, would be very helpful," said Kerry TD Griffin.

"I see the economic benefits that come from bank holidays.

"The tail end of the year would probably be better as we have a lot together in the early part of the year with St. Patrick's Day, Easter and May."
