Coronavirus Ireland: Nearly 600 healthcare workers test positive for Covid-19 as 84 cases now in ICU

Nearly 600 heroic healthcare workers in Ireland have tested positive for the coronavirus.

It comes as the number of cases in Intensive Care Units has risen to 84.

These figures relate to the 2,475 notified cases in Ireland, which were recorded as of midnight on Saturday.

The Department of Health released the latest data on Monday which showed 645 patients have been hospitalised with Covid-19.

And 23% of confirmed cases in the Republic of Ireland are associated with healthcare workers.

Here are the latest figures from the 2,475 notified cases. Monday’s data from Health Protection Surveillance Centre, reveals:

  • 50% are male and 49% are female, with 111 clusters involving 428 cases
  • the median age of confirmed cases is 47 years
  • 645 cases (26%) have been hospitalised
  • Of those hospitalised, 84 cases have been admitted to ICU
  • 578 cases (23%) are associated with healthcare workers
  • Dublin has the highest number of cases at 1,393 (56% of all cases) followed by Cork with 217 cases (9%)
  • Of those for whom transmission status is known: community transmission accounts for 50%, close contact accounts for 27%, travel abroad accounts for 23%

However, 295 new confirmed cases of Covid-19 have been announced, bringing the total in the Republic to 2,910.

And eight more people have now died from the coronavirus here, meaning the death toll in Ireland now stands at 54.

Dr Tony Holohan, Chief Medical Officer, Department of Health, said: “We are beginning to see encouraging signs in our efforts to flatten the curve.

"However, we cannot become complacent as we are still seeing new cases and more ICU admissions every day.

“Our strategy remains the implementation of public health restrictions to interrupt the spread of the virus and prevent people from arriving to ICU in first place.”

Six of the new reported deaths were in the east, one was in the south while one was in the west.

Five of these were female and three were male. The median age of the new deaths is 86.

Six of those who died had underlying health conditions.

Earlier on Monday, it was announced another person in Northern Ireland died from the virus bringing the North's death toll to 22.

The NI Public Health Agency's latest statistics, accurate as of Monday morning, also show that an additional 123 have tested positive for the contagious disease since.

This brings the total number confirmed to have the disease in Northern Ireland to 533.
