Coronavirus Ireland: Monaghan footballer Dessie Ward creates his own GAA pitch during lockdown

Sportspeople around the world are having to train alone amid the coronavirus pandemic and GAA stars are no different.

Monaghan's Dessie Ward has taken matters into his own hands and built his own GAA pitch.

He explained to the Ryan Tubridy Show on RTÉ Radio 1: "I was out on the Ballybay football field just the day I heard about lockdown.

"I spent an hour and a half out on the field, just kicking about on my own and I just took it into my own hands.

"Whenever I got home, I just said, 'Here, there's no way we could possibly go without football for the next couple of weeks.'"

After going into a field behind his house, Ward found an area to build a pitch.

He added: "I was looking around and basically there was a nice flat area and I was saying to myself, 'You know what? We may build a football field here possibly'.

"So I came back down to the house and grabbed my brother Matthew and I said it to him about whether we could make a football field here.

"He laughed and maybe he thought I was mad in the head but he said he'd give it a watch anyway."

With the help of a roller and some old goalposts, the pitch was soon created.

Ward said: "I wondered would the club mind me taking them, so I got onto our caretaker Brendan and he was happy enough for me to [take them].

"So it worked out perfect."
