Coronavirus Ireland: Michael Conlan wishes fans a happy St. Patrick's Day after fight cancelled

Michael Conlan has wished fans a happy St. Patrick's Day today after his fight was cancelled due to coronavirus.

The Belfast boxer (13-0) has fought on the day every year since making his pro debut in 2017, and was penned to face Belmar Preciado at Madison Square Garden.

But the bout was cancelled last week as the world shuts down to fight the coronavirus outbreak.

Conlan took to Twitter this morning to post a snap of his last Paddy's Day, with Irish WWE star Finn Balor proudly waving an Irish flag behind him.

He said: "Happy St Patrick’s Day".

The 28-year-old stressed his disappointment that the fight folded, but warned that a lot of fighters will suffer with no income due to the lockdown.

"I'm in a very fortunate place to be where I am, financially and everything like that, from sport but there's fighters who are a bit down the pecking order from me and they are going to struggle," Conlan told RTÉ 2fm's Game On on Saturday.

"There's an awful lot of people (on my team) and obviously because I don't get paid none of us get paid. It's an unfortunate situation, not one anyone wants to be in, but I'm in it."
