Coronavirus Ireland: 'Memorandum of understanding' with Northern Ireland to be signed by Tanaiste Simon Coveney to beat Covid-19

Simon Coveney will sign a “memorandum of understanding” with Northern Ireland leaders to better coordinate efforts to beat coronavirus on the island of Ireland.

The Tanaiste and Minister for Foreign Affairs spoke by teleconference with the British Secretary of State for NI Brandon Lewis and Stormont leaders Arlene Foster and Michelle O’Neill.

The talks came as concerns are being raised here about the different approaches being taken in the north and Republic which could ruin the careful attempts to curb the spread of the virus.

The outcome will be a new agreement that will see agencies from both sides of the border work together to bring about the best results.

Having different rules and regulations to deal with the coronavirus crisis is not the most efficient way to defeat the virus and reduce deaths.

Ms O’Neill called for an All-Ireland approach to beat the coronavirus after she finished the teleconference meeting.

She said: “The Covid-19 pandemic does not respect borders.

“Co-operation and common action across our island is vital at this time.

“Protection of the lives and welfare of everyone on the island is paramount, and no effort will be spared in that objective.

“Working closely together the two Chief Medical Officers will sign a Memorandum of Understanding formalising coordination and cooperation between the Irish Government and the (Northern Ireland) Executive this week.

“We need to be agile, open and have close and ongoing contact with frequent meetings of all those who met today, and a fortnight ago in Armagh to do our absolute level best to save lives and protect public health of everyone on this island.”
