Coronavirus Ireland: Lorry driver appears to announce he's quitting his job live on RTE news

A lorry driver has been praised for appearing to announce that he planned to quit his job live on RTE News.

The Irish-based haulier said he was just about to turn 66 and was already planning on retiring - but with a trip to Italy next on his job list he's going to leave early.

While being interviewed on RTE's six-one news Dmitri Favva said he wouldn't "chance" going to Italy as coronavirus grips the country.

Mr Favva said: "April 12th I'm going to be 66, and I put my papers in for my pension but that's my list trip, I'm going to stay home.

"I'm not going to chance it going over there in Italy, I think my next trip is in Italy so I'm going in the office there and tell them and 'thank you very much, nice to know you' and bye."

And the lorry driver came in for praise on social media with people saluting his attitude.

Reddit user armanon89 said: "What a legend. Aged 66 his next job, as a haulier, was to do a pickup in Italy.

"And said on the National News that instead of taking the job he's going in meeting the boss and telling him to keep it."

Some factories in Italy are still accepting haulage delivers despite the country lockdown due to 9,000 people being infected by coronavirus.
