Coronavirus Ireland: Lockdown leads to surge in Irish Google searches for board games, workouts and online courses

Board games, home workouts and online courses are Ireland’s favourite lockdown hobbies, new research has revealed.

Google searches for traditional games such as Monopoly rose by 338% last month compared with the same time last year.

Exercise and learning were next on the list – each rising by 150% – however, yoga and meditation saw only a slight increase of 15% and 6%.

The data from discount site picodi.com also shows searches for drawing were up 60%.

As you might expect, interest in activities that require leaving the house have taken a nosedive as non-essential businesses around the country remain shut.

Searches for theatre dropped by 81% while cinema plunged by 78%.

There was also a 71% drop in searches for concerts.

With flights grounded and a ban on non-essential international travel, searches about learning foreign languages fell by 10%.
