Coronavirus Ireland: Lesser known COVID-19 symptom that means you should go to hospital, experts warn

More than 1.8 million people have so far been confirmed to have the coronavirus across the globe as countries continue to battle the killer bug.

And with that it's important that we all know the main symptoms to look out for, so that we can monitor our health and keep others safe.

A continuous dry cough and a fever are two of the major warning signs.

But those who have recovered from COVID-19 have shared numerous other symptoms they experienced during their illness - including headaches and loss of taste/smell.

And while these are symptoms we can most likely recover from with plenty of rest at home while self-isolating, there's one sign you might want to keep an eye out for - and that's the colour of your lips.

If you've noticed your lips are turning blue, this could be a sign of pneumonia according to leading doctors in the UK, which is a complication of severe coronavirus and means you need to go straight to hospital.

Most people who have COVID-19 experience mild or moderate symptoms, including shortness of breath, coughing and fatigue.

However, some who catch the respiratory virus experience much more extreme symptoms and can even get pneumonia.

The experts in the UK say: "At the end of the breathing tubes in your lungs are clusters of tiny air sacs.

"Common pneumonia symptoms include a cough and difficulty breathing, but those with the illness may also notice their lips are turning blue.

"This is due to a lack of oxygen in the blood."

Experts warn that anyone with blue lips should head straight to a hospital for urgent care.

Coronavirus symptoms:

  • a cough - this can be any kind of cough, not just dry
  • shortness of breath
  • breathing difficulties
  • fever or chills

Other symptoms are fatigue, headaches, sore throat, aches and pains.
