Coronavirus Ireland latest as 5 new deaths and 423 more cases announced

There have been 5 further deaths related to COVID-19 announced today by NPHET.

That brings the total in the country to 4,732. Four of these deaths occurred in April, and 1 in February.

And 423 more cases of the coronavirus have been confirmed in Ireland, bringing the overall total since the pandemic began to 239,325.

Of the cases notified today:

  • 219 are men / 201 are women
  • 73% are under 45 years of age
  • The median age is 30 years old
  • 199 in Dublin, 41 in Kildare, 23 in Meath, 20 in Galway, 18 in Westmeath and the remaining 122 spread across 19 other counties.

As of 8am today, 232 COVID-19 patients are hospitalised, of which 56 are in ICU. 13 additional hospitalisations in the past 24 hours.

As of April 4 2021, 936,087 doses of COVID-19 vaccine have been administered in Ireland:

  • 663,411 people have received their first dose
  • 272,676 people have received their second dose

Earlier today the World Health Organisation said it believes outdoor dining is the way forward for businesses in the hospitality sector to reopen their doors amid the Covid-19 pandemic in Ireland.

WHO Special Envoy on Covid-19, Dr David Nabarro, said he believes the option would be suitable as recent figures suggest that outdoor transmission of the coronavirus accounts for 0.1% of reported cases.

Speaking to Pat Kenny on Newstalk Breakfast Dr Nabarro said: "I think all countries are going to look at more outdoor living because there's so much evidence that the disease is much less likely to spread if people meet outdoors and especially if they are careful and maintain the physical distance.

“So therefore I think we will see a big emphasis on outdoor dining and outdoor recreation."
