Coronavirus Ireland latest as 437 new cases and no further deaths announced

There have been 437 new cases of COVID-19 announced in Ireland this evening by NPHET.

At a briefing in the Department of Health today, they confirmed the cases along with no more deaths related to the disease.

Of the cases notified today:

  • 216 are men / 218 are women
  • 71% are under 45 years of age
  • The median age is 34 years old
  • 184 in Dublin, 31 in Limerick, 26 in Donegal, 20 in Galway, 18 in Offaly and the remaining 158 cases are spread across all other counties

The briefing is being chaired by Dr Ronan Glynn, Deputy Chief Medical Officer after he confirmed that infection has fallen in residential long term care settings.

They were among the first areas to get COVID-19 vaccines, and including nursing homes.

Dr Ronan Glynn confirmed that there's been a similar decrease to that seen in healthcare workers after receiving the jab.

In a letter to the Department of Health last week he warned that the epidemiological situation in Ireland was improving but remained “very finely balanced”.

It comes as the green light was given to schools this morning to bring all primary students as well as fifth year secondary students back to school on Monday.

The letter says that the Department of Health and the HSE “have reaffirmed that the gradual phased reopening can proceed as planned”.
