Coronavirus Ireland latest as 274 cases confirmed with 166 in restricted Dublin

There have been 274 further cases of COVID-19 confirmed in Ireland today with 166 of them in restricted Dublin.

That brings the total number of cases since the pandemic began to 32,538 in Ireland.

There have also been no further coronavirus related deaths confirmed by health chiefs.

So far, 1,792 people have sadly lost their lives due to COVID-19 related illness.

Of the cases notified today;

  • 142 are men / 129 are women
  • 65% are under 45 years of age
  • 52% are confirmed to be associated with outbreaks or are close contacts of a confirmed case
  • 52 cases have been identified as community transmission
  • 166 in Dublin, 21 in Cork, 19 in Donegal, 7 in Kildare, 7 in Offaly, 6 in Waterford, 6 in Wicklow, 5 in Louth, 5 in Limerick and 5 in Meath and the remaining 27 cases are located across 12 counties.

Dublin went under Level 3 restrictions from midnight, with travel in and out of the county restricted except for essential reasons.

Pubs, restaurants and cafes serving food have also had to shut their doors and can only serve customers for take-away or up to 15 people in outdoor seating.

Taoiseach Micheál Martin says the objective of restrictions is to get Dublin back to level two and that the the lockdown in Kildare, Laois and Offaly did work.

He says that we have reduced numbers contracting Covid-19 before and we can do it again.

The Cork native said today that numbers "are growing exponentially" and he is worried.

Wet pubs were allowed open in all counties apart from the capital because the situation outside of Dublin is different.

He told Brendan O'Connor on RTE Radio One: "Our objective is to get back to Level 2 in Dublin we must really focus on adhering to the guidelines and the rules.

"That's the best way to avoid Level 4."

"There is a huge economic issue here as well that we cannot ignore."
