Coronavirus Ireland: Kilkenny star TJ Reid sharing GAA skills and helping keep kids fit during crisis

Kilkenny talisman TJ Reid is helping keep kids fit and sharing some of his top tips during the coronavirus shutdown.

Reid, who runs a gym in Kilkenny, has turned to video to keep the business ticking over and on top of fitness videos for members, he's began running two weekly classes mixing GAA and fitness drills for kids.

And the Cats forward has seen the initiative take flight, receiving messages from people all over the world about the online classes.

"It's been fantastic," TJ told RTE 2fm's Game On of the response to his initiative. "It's going from Ireland to places like New York and Texas, I’m getting tweets and messages on social media from all over the world."

"Hurling season is closed for the time being. I’m outside pucking the ball off the gable end again, the way I started when I was four or five years of age.

"So I said to myself 'Wouldn’t it be great if we could do a few skills and incorporate some exercise moves to keep kids in shape'. Just taking the kids away from the family or the books for 35 minutes.

"It incorporates hurling skills, football skills, some cardio and strength movements as well."

And the 32-year-old said he won't be addressing the ongoing crisis in a bid to keep followers' minds off the pandemic.

He added: "I won't be talking about what’s going on out there because there are enough people that are doing a great job on that.

"For me when you go training it’s about coming with a smile on your face and enjoying the work out, and forgetting about what’s going on out there.

"I always tell people, try to prioritise 30-45 minutes a day just to get something in, and take in the fresh air. At the moment, it's long enough staying inside watching TV or sitting down."
