Coronavirus Ireland: Irish supermarket sets aside special opening hours for elderly customers

A supermarket in Northern Ireland has set aside special opening hours for the elderly, during the current Covid-19 crisis.

Iceland in the Kennedy Centre in West Belfast made the decision top open its doors to elderly customers who may be vulnerable as people have swarmed shops in recent days.

The move has since attracted hundreds of supporters online with their act of kindness, Iceland in the Kennedy Centre has been congratulated by none other than Gino D'Acampo, Belfast Live reports.

The store announced this morning that starting from Tuesday March 17, that they will open from 8-9am for elderly customers only.

In a statement the retail giant said: "Iceland Foods will be opening their store between 8-9am for the elderly commencing Tuesday 17th March.

"Could the wider public please respect this hour, and understand that this time is allocated for elderly people only.

"Iceland appeal to peoples better nature when realising who needs priority."

Last week product purchasing limits were introduced by Lidl and Aldi on selected items after chaotic "panic buying" scenes at many stores across Ireland.

David Fitzsimons, Group Chief Executive of Retail Excellence, said the group had spoken to major grocery outlets and forecourt operators in Ireland and that it "would like to reassure everyone that Ireland is prepared to continue to supply all grocery outlets for the coming months".

He added: "There is no reason for Irish citizens to have any concern in that regard.

"The industry has never been more prepared having planned for a hard Brexit over the past number of months.

"Minister Heather Humphreys, Minister of Business and Enterprise, has done a tremendous job in monitoring this matter and please be assured that we have more than adequate contingencies in place.

"Social media images of empty shelves are simply sensationalizing the matter. These shelves are restocked every evening and restocking will continue into the future.

"We echo An Taoiseach’s comments when this morning he confirmed that the shops will remain open and we have plans to ensure supply chains will not be interrupted."
