Coronavirus Ireland: Irish rugby stars send support to National Maternity Hospital staff

Former Ireland ace Tommy Bowe was among a number of rugby stars who sent a message of support to National Maternity Hospital staff.

Bowe has a four-week-old son, who he appears with in the video message, and thanked staff for bringing 'little miracles' into the world during a challenging time for healthcare workers.

Bowe said: "The work you are doing bringing these little miracle into the world and with a smile on your face – it is so important and so appreciated."

Penny Mitchell - a midwife at the hospital on Dublin's Holles Street - contacted players using social media and they responded with a video to support the maternity staff.

Ex-Ireland captain Rory Best is joined by former team-mates Gordon D’Arcy, Sean O’Brien and Peter Stringer.

Current Ireland aces Robbie Henshaw, James Ryan, Andrew Conway, Ross Byrne, Dave Kilcoyne and John Cooney also feature in the video.

"All I could think of on my way home from another busy shift was, what can I do to help my fellow colleagues to boost their spirits and to help morale across the hospital? The response I received was overwhelming and totally unexpected,” Mitchell said.

National Maternity Hospital Master Prof Shane Higgins added: “I was genuinely in awe when I saw what Penny had created and I hope that her desire to reach every healthcare worker right across the county is realised.

"I would like to take this opportunity to wish Penny, all our extraordinary staff at The National Maternity Hospital, patients, families and supporters of the hospital a very Happy Easter, please stay safe everyone.”
