Coronavirus Ireland: Irish government may introduce travel restrictions from UK due to new Covid strain

The government will announce potential travel restrictions from the UK today, Health Minister Stephen Donnelly has confirmed.

The news comes as parts of Britain have been locked down due to new strain of COVID-19 which was labelled as "out of control" by the UK Health Secretary Matt Hancock.

Mr Donnelly said that he had been monitoring flights and ferries coming into Ireland from the UK, RTE reports.

Belgium, Italy, and the Netherlands have already banned passenger flights from the UK.

Earlier this morning, World Health Organisation said that it is in "close contact" with the UK.

The WHO have said they are looking to analyse the new strain and see what, if any, implications it might have.

A spokesperson for the WHO said: "We’re in close contact with UK officials on the new COVID-19 virus variant.

"They’ll continue to share info & results of their analysis & ongoing studies. We’ll update Member States & public as we learn more about the characteristics of this virus variant & any implications.

"In the meantime, we continue to advise people to take all protective measures to prevent the spread of the COVID-19 virus and comply with national authorities' guidance."

It was confirmed over the weekend that the new strain of virus had not yet been detected in Ireland.
