Coronavirus Ireland: HSE to discuss plans to increase testing to 100,000 per week

The HSE is likely to address plans to ramp up testing for Covid-19 at a briefing later this morning.

The current testing capacity is 10,000 per day however, it's believed the HSE could increase it to 100,000 per week if needed.

Health Minister Simon Harris said HSE Chief Executive Paul Reid will publish a plan this week outlining how testing levels can be increased.

And he denied reports of tensions between the HSE and the National Public Health Emergency Team (NPHET) about the decision to increase testing and the HSE's ability to carry out testing.

Mr Harris said he had never seen such collaboration among those working in health, RTE reports.

He added that everyone was working hard in a really tense situation.

The latest figures from the HSE show that a further 52 people have died and there are 377 new confirmed cases of coronavirus in Ireland.

The latest figures from the National Public Health Emergency Team (NPHET) show that 42 lab confirmed deaths took place alongside 10 suspected Covid-19 deaths, taking the death toll here to 1,063.

Validation of data at the HPSC has resulted in the denotification of three deaths, the group said.

As of 1pm on Saturday, April 25, the HPSC has a total of 18,561 confirmed cases of Covid-19 in Ireland - a jump of 377.
