Coronavirus Ireland: HSE's seven key steps to follow if waiting on a Covid-19 test

There is currently a backlog on testing for the coronavirus in Ireland as health officials come to terms with the high levels of demand.

So far nearly 18,000 tests have been carried out nationwide with 94% of those being returned as negative.

The threshold for testing has now been changed as to concentrate tests on those who are most likely to have it.

Possible Covid-19 patients must have a fever and either a cough or shortness of breath, or fall into a priority group, if they are to be tested.

The priority group relates to healthcare staff, vulnerable groups and contacts of a confirmed case.

Here's the HSE's advice on what you should do if awaiting a Covid-19 test.

Seven key steps if awaiting a Covid-19 test

  • While you wait for your test, you should behave as if you have the virus by self-isolating for 14 days

  • People in your household will need to restrict their movements

  • Treat your symptoms at home

  • Drink enough water to avoid dehydration - your pee should be light yellow or clear

  • Paracetamol or ibuprofen may help with symptoms such as pain or fever

  • Before taking any medication, read the full package leaflet that comes with your medicine. You should also follow any advice a healthcare professional gives you, and

  • If your symptoms get worse or are severe, phone your GP.

How many positive cases are there in Ireland now?

A new death was sadly announced on Tuesday evening that takes the death toll here due to Covid-19 to seven, while another 204 new cases were also confirmed, taking the total here to 1,329.

The figures are correct as of 1pm on Tuesday.
