Coronavirus Ireland: HSE records lowest number of hospitalised cases since mid-March

Ireland has recorded another new low in its fight against the coronavirus as hospitalised cases are at their lowest point since mid-March.

The latest operations report from the HSE shows that 50 people were being treated for confirmed Covid-19 in a hospital as of 8pm on Wednesday.

That figure is down from 60 the day before and from the peak of 879 recorded back in April.

Despite a decline in patients, The Mater continues to treat the most hospitalised cases with 10.

Beaumont had eight virus cases on site, while Limerick and Tallaght both had six.

There were also a further 199 suspected cases of the virus spread out across the majority of hospitals in Ireland.

HSE chief Paul Reid on Thursday morning revealed more than 99% of people tested negative for their Covid-19 tests over the past week.

He said: "This morning 99.2% of people did not test positive over the last 7 days.

"21 patients in ICU, down 87% on the peak of 160. 50 confirmed patients in hospital, down 94% on the peak of 879. We can do this together."

As mentioned by Mr Reid, there were 21 confirmed coronavirus patients in an ICU on Wednesday night.

That number is up one from the night before but nearly eight times less than the peak of 160.

There were a further 10 suspected cases in a critical care facility.

The death toll from the virus here stands at 1,710.

There have now been a total of 25,341 infections.
