Coronavirus Ireland: HSE confirms that none of its nurses have died from deadly Covid-19 infection

The HSE has confirmed that none of its nurses have died from Covid-19 infection.

The organisation was responding to speculation that a nurse had passed away after catching the virus while working on a hospital word.

To date, one healthcare worker in Ireland has died from the deadly disease.

In a statement this morning, a HSE spokesman said: "The HSE doesn’t comment on individual cases to protect people’s privacy.

"However, when we become aware of fake news that causes distress to our staff and families we must act.

"Contrary to tweets sent yesterday - thankfully none of our nurses have died in Ireland from Covid-19."

The news comes after the number of confirmed cases in Ireland hit 2,910 yesterday, with a total of 54 people passing away in the Republic.

Meanwhile, Taoiseach Leo Varadkar spoke with Chinese premier Li Keqiang on Tuesday morning to thank Chinese authorities for helping Ireland with the supply of essential medical equipment.

Ireland has a framework agreement for the purchase of large quantities of supplies from China, with the first supplies arriving on Sunday.

Premier Li said they would continue to facilitate smooth implementation of these arrangements, including transport of the medical supplies to Ireland.

It comes as experts on the National Public Health Emergency Team welcomed data showing the infection rate has dropped from 33% to 15% since restrictions on public life were first introduced earlier this month.

Leading epidemiologist Professor Philip Nolan said it would be another seven to 10 days before it could be determined whether the latest clampdown on movement, imposed by the Government on Friday night, had helped to further cut the infection rate.

Monday also saw the Government formalise an agreement with private hospitals to use all of their facilities during the Covid-19 crisis.

Meanwhile, thousands of people who have lost their jobs as a result of the Covid-19 pandemic are due to receive their first benefit payment today.

The Covid-19 Pandemic Unemployment Payment was introduced two weeks ago and 389,000 people applied for the payment.
