Coronavirus Ireland: How long will strict measures last and when could country get back to normal?

Taoiseach Leo Varadkar announced even stricter social distancing measures this week as Ireland attempts to flatten the Covid-19 curve.

These included the closure of all non-essential retail outlets and businesses as well as asking those who can work from home to do so.

A new death was sadly announced on Tuesday evening that takes the death toll due to Covid-19 to seven, while another 204 new cases were also confirmed, taking the total here to 1,329.

Here's all you need to know about how long these measures will last and what happens next.

How long will the new measures last?

The original date given for the first batch of measures was March 29, although it was always expected to be pushed back.

The Taoiseach announced during his speech that these latest stricter measures will be in place until April 19th when the situation will be evaluated again.

Mr Varadkar said: "In order to assist all of this, the restrictions I announced in Washington DC are being extended until Sunday 19 April."

But there is no expectation that April 19th will see the end of this pandemic, with measures likely to become even stricter or just simply extended by then.

How long until Ireland gets back to normal?

Unfortunately, restrictions are in all likelihood going to go on for a lot longer than the latest date of April 19th.

If we are to take China as an example of how long this will take, on January 23rd they cut-off the city of Wuhan from the rest of the country as it went into complete lockdown.

Now, almost exactly two months later, China is looking at relaxing restrictions as community transmissions have appeared to stop.

Ireland's restrictions began in mid-March so mid-May would be a conservative estimate going by the Chinese timeline of when going back to normal could be considered.

However, China went for a full lockdown early on which sped up their process.

The Irish approach is not quite as harsh.
