The National Public Health Emergency team will meet today to discuss a major concerning coronavirus trend in one area.
The health chiefs have admitted that the number of elderly people who have contracted the virus in recent weeks has been a major cause for concern.
It was confirmed on Wednesday that 70 people over the age of 75 have contracted the disease in the past fortnight.
Ireland's cases have been high over the past month but the death rate remained low with fewer vulnerable people contracting the virus.
Professor Philip Nolan, who tracks the virus, said: “In the last week we have begun to see a delayed increase among older and vulnerable groups. Everyone must be cautious in their interactions with these groups.”
This, he said, follows almost no cases in that age group in the summer months leading up to August.
A further 89 new cases were confirmed in Ireland on Wednesday with Dr Ronan Glynn admitting the disease was more prevalent than they would like.
The emergency team will meet today to discuss all these latest trends but no major decisions are expected to be announced.
The opening of pubs and further easing of restrictions will not be discussed again until closer to September 13.
