Coronavirus Ireland growth areas: Donegal more than quadruples numbers in a week as Tipperary and Limerick treble cases

Donegal's coronavirus cases have more than quadrupled in the space of a week, according to the latest data.

As of midnight on March 24th, the amount of cases in the north-west stood at 12, with that figure surging to 63 as of Monday.

This shows a sharp increase with confirmed cases more than quadrupling in just six days.

Donegal isn't the only area showing worrying growth - in Munster a number of regions are beginning to jump dramatically.

Limerick now has the fourth highest number of cases in the entire country with 87 as of March 30th, but just six days earlier that number stood at 24.

Neighbouring Tipperary has also more than trebled in that time period, going from 27 on the 24th to 85 in the most recent available data.

Dublin remains the epicentre of the crisis, accounting for 55% of all confirmed coronavirus cases in the country.

Cork remains second on that list with 255, but is not growing rapidly.

These figures relate to the 2,990 notified cases in Ireland which were recorded of midnight on Monday.

And the latest data from these cases, collected by the Health Protection Surveillance Centre, shows that:

  • 48% are male and 50% are female, with 134 clusters involving 563 cases
  • Median age of confirmed cases is 48 years
  • 834 cases (28%) have been hospitalised
  • Of those hospitalised, 126 cases have been admitted to ICU
  • 752 cases (25%) are associated with healthcare workers
  • Dublin has the highest number of cases at 1,645 (55% of all cases) followed by Cork with 255 cases (8%)
  • Of those for whom transmission status is known: community transmission accounts for 60%, close contact accounts for 21%, travel abroad accounts for 18%.

It comes as 14 more people tragically died from the coronavirus, bringing the number of deaths in the Republic to 85.

A total of 3,447 people here have now tested positive for the bug.
