Coronavirus Ireland: Government begs public to 'get off the streets'

Get off the streets is the new message from the Department of the Taoiseach this morning.

Following Dr Tony Holohan’s similar plea last night, the Government has revealed shocking new evidence that people are ignoring the ‘stay at home’ message in their droves.

Dublin Bus has told government officials that they have seen an increase in passenger numbers every day over the past week.

This disturbing finding shows that people are clearly on the move more and it tallies with Dr Holohan’s evidence from Thursday’s briefing where he showed seismic evidence of the same problem.

Assistant Secretary at the Department of the Taoiseach, Liz Canavan, said at the Government’s daily coronavirus briefing this morning that movement is now “certainly a cause for concern” after reviewing more official evidence.

She said: “Car traffic is but just one indicator of activity levels…… I have more information today.

“Dublin Bus notified us yesterday that there has been an increase in passenger numbers day on day this week and that all levels are above those seen the previous week.

“They are engaging with the National Transport Authority trying to pinpoint more information for us.”
