Coronavirus Ireland: Galway school confirms kids asked to stay home after child tests positive

A number of kids have been asked to stay home after a coronavirus case was confirmed at a school in Co Galway.

Tirellan Heights National School, also known as Scoil San Phroinsias, confirmed a student had tested positive over the mid-term break.

The school has around 400 pupils in total and is based in Galway city.

A letter sent to parents and guardians yesterday said: "A child in our school tested positive for Covid-19 over the mid-term break. This case was notified to the Department of Public Health, HSE West.

"A public health risk assessment has been undertaken and the parents of any children deemed to be close contacts of the confirmed case have been contacted and advised accordingly."

Students from one class at the school have been asked to stay at home until next week.

School officials added: "All the parents in the class have been informed. In cooperation with the HSE the class group was put on restricted movement alert and will be sent for testing. It has also been confirmed that the children from this class can begin returning to school from the 7th of November.

"All other children have NOT been identified as a close contacts in the school setting and do NOT need a test for Covid-19, they can continue to attend school, and no further actions are required at this time."

It is understood that the rest of the school will also continue to operate as normal.
