Coronavirus Ireland: Fury as gardai break up 'multiple' house parties over Easter weekend

Locals have shared their anger after gardai were forced to break up "multiple" house parties over the Easter weekend.

Officers in Co Kilkenny and Co Carlow revealed they received several calls up to the early hours of Sunday morning.

And gardai were quick to remind the public that these gatherings are currently illegal due to the emergency coronavirus powers.

A spokesman said: "In an evening that gave us the Shining the Light community initiative which showed the best of our spirit, unfortunately others fell short.

"House parties were reported in multiple locations by people who prioritised their enjoyment over the safety and health of others.

"This can undo good work and ultimately cost lives. The special measures in force mean that such gatherings are illegal at the moment.

"Calls were received by Gardai up to the early hours. Social distancing becomes impossible when households mix after consuming alcohol and other intoxicants.

"To the vast majority with their shoulders to the wheel in these tough times, thank you.

"To those who fell short, please, please look around you and think."

And the incidents provoked huge anger among local residents.

One wrote: "Actually soul destroying. All our emergency services, medical staff, retail staff who have no choice but to risk their lives for us all and idiots like this who can't see past the end of their nose.

"Along with all the people who died and those who are suffering because of Covid-19 and it's still not enough for them to have an ounce of humanity for others."

While another added: "Off-licences should be closed and stop the sale of alcohol. Or greatly curtail it."
