Coronavirus Ireland: Former Olympic boxer Kenny Egan resigns Fine Gael whip on South Dublin County Council after breaking travel guidelines

A Fine Gael councillor has resigned the party whip after breaking COVID-19 travel restrictions.

Olympic silver medalist Kenny Egan, who was elected in the Clondalkin ward, confirmed he has resigned from the party.

It follows a visit to Baltimore in west Cork on August 22 after being in attendance at a boxing event in Essex in the UK the week before. He travelled to the UK on August 9.

The practising psychotherapist arrived back into Dublin Airport on August 15 and tested negative for COVID-19.

But by travelling to west Cork seven days later, he broke the coronavirus guidelines that require people to restrict movements for 14 days on return to Ireland from the UK.

In a statement to Independent.ie, he "sincerely apologised" for his actions.

He said: "I want to sincerely apologise for breaching the health guidelines upon my return to the country earlier this month.

“It simply should not have happened. I made a big mistake and I am sincerely sorry for it.

“To defeat this pandemic, all should obey the public health guidelines. Public representatives have an even bigger responsibility to do so and I failed in this regard.

"I want to apologise to all but most importantly to the public and communities I have been elected to serve. The fight against Covid-19 continues. I wish everyone every success in this ongoing battle."

The former boxer has been a member of South Dublin County Council since 2014.
