Coronavirus Ireland: Five deaths and 46 additional cases confirmed

It has been confirmed that a further five people have sadly died from coronavirus in Ireland.

An additional 46 cases of the deadly bug have also been announced by the Department of Health.

The death toll from COVID-19 in the country now stands at 1,705 while there have been a total of 25,295 infections.

The number of new cases announced this evening are significantly higher than in recent days.

Department of Health Chief Medical Officer, Dr Tony Holohan explained that these new cases were spread out over a number of days.

He said: “Today’s increase in notifications of COVID-19 is not an increase in the daily incidence of the disease.

"When the cases are analysed according to the date the samples were taken, it shows that they were spread out over a number of days.

"All the indicators of the disease are stable or reducing. We will continue to closely monitor these every day."
