Coronavirus Ireland: Exact age profile of patients admitted to ICU released for the first time

The exact age profile of Ireland's coronavirus cases who have been admitted to an ICU has been released for the first time.

Up until last weekend, the health chiefs have included all elderly patients who have been in intensive care in the "65+" category.

But now the Health Protection Surveillance Centre's reports are showing a clearer breakdown of these cases.

The latest reports states 111 people aged between 55-64 have been admitted to a critical care facility - the worst-affected age bracket in the country.

There have been 96 patients in the 65-74 age profile, and 78 people between the ages of 45-54, admitted to an ICU since the outbreak began.

Six people over the age of 85 and 37 between 75-84 who contracted the virus were also admitted.

In terms of the youngest patients, there have been two children between five and 14 who have fought for their lives after being diagnosed with the infection.

Six were aged 15-24, 14 were between 25-34 and 33 were in the 35-44 age profile.

These numbers make up the 383 people who have been admitted to an ICU as of midnight on Saturday, May 9.

However, the HPSC report does not state the fatality rate of these cases and whether or not they had an underlying condition.

More than half of the country's virus related deaths have occurred in residential and nursing homes, a possible reason why there the number of elderly ICU cases is relatively low.

There were 72 active critical care cases in hospitals on Sunday, according to the HSE's Daily Operations Update report.

The death toll in the Republic of Ireland now stands at 1,467.

There have been 23,135 confirmed cases of the virus so far.
