An elderly patient who tested positive for Covid-19 has sadly died in a hospital in Northern Ireland.

The Department of Health said the patient had an underlying medical condition and was being treated in a hospital in the greater Belfast area, reports Belfast Live.

Health Minister Robin Swann said:  “I want to express my deep sadness at this death and send my condolences to the patient’s family and friends. It is, of course, essential that we respect their privacy at this sad time.

"I would once again appeal to everyone to play their part in fighting the spread of this virus.”

This is the first death from COVID-19 reported in Northern Ireland where 68 cases have been reported so far.

A further 74 new cases of the virus were reported in the Republic of Ireland up to midday yesterday.

This brought the number of confirmed cases in the Republic to 366, bringing total number of cases on the island of Ireland to 434.

There have been two confirmed deaths in the Republic, both of whom had underlying health conditions.
