Coronavirus Ireland: Eerie scenes on Drogheda's main street as lockdown takes hold

This was the scene this morning on the main street of Ireland’s biggest town.

There wasn’t a soul to be seen on West Street in Drogheda, Co Louth, where more than 700,000 people had partied last summer for a week during the Fleadh.

People are obeying the Government’s advice to stay at home and only go out to get food, exercise or to look after relatives.

Taoiseach Leo Varadkar’s voluntary clampdown is being respected right across the country as gardai have had no reports of citizens violating the new temporary rules.

Random checkpoints were set up over the weekend especially around greater Dublin parks and coastal areas.

Officers and Health Experts wanted to avoid the stupidity of the previous weekend when large numbers of families gathered along the beaches and at other scenic areas, speeding up the pandemic.

In Drogheda the only people around were two ladies praying inside the beautiful St Peter’s Church where the head of St Oliver Plunkett is kept.

All Masses have been cancelled as in the rest of the country.

Even the much-publicised gangland criminal feud in Drogheda has fizzled out for the moment.

Gardai say no cocaine is being sold because no one is out.

One senior officer added: “All the main players have vanished and gone to ground. It is probably the only good thing that has come out of this Covid-19 crisis.”
