Coronavirus Ireland: Dublin school worry as children told stay at home after serious Covid-19 outbreak

Children have been told to stay home after two Covid-19 cases were confirmed in a class at a Dublin school.

Both of the infections occurred in boys in 6th class at the primary school on the northside of the city.

Students in the year group were then informed and asked to restrict their movements before being sent for testing.

They will not return to school today after the end of the mid-term break.

Instead it is expected that they will be allowed to return on Thursday.

A letter to parents and guardians read: "In cooperation with the Public Health Authority and HSE a risk assessment was made and the class group was put on restricted movement alert and sent for testing.

"It has been confirmed by the Public Health Authority (as of Saturday 31st of October) that children from that class group can begin returning to school on Thursday 5th of November, their families having complied with the recommended procedures.

"We commend the parents and guardians of the class group for their full cooperation and support during this demanding time."

It comes after the Minister for Education Norma Foley insisted that a new testing and tracing system will be rolled out in schools after the return from the mid-term break this week.

The secondary school teachers' union the ASTI had threatened industrial action if new testing and tracing systems and other major changes weren't put in place to ensure teacher safety.

Among the key issues that the ASTI said needed to be addressed were adequate testing and test turnaround, redefinition of close contacts, IT resources for students and teachers to facilitate continuity of learning, and reasonable accommodations for teachers in the "high risk" category.
